My name is Dave, and I’m the founder of Crossborder Personal Finance. As a lifelong DIY investor with a passion for empowering people through financial literacy, I’m dedicated to helping US individuals navigate the complexities of living financially in Canada.
My Cross-Border Journey & Professional Path
My family and I made the move from the US to Canada in 2020. This firsthand experience plunged me into the world of cross-border personal finance, and I quickly realized two things: the information can be incredibly complex, and there’s a significant need for accessible guidance. There are some true experts out there, but they often have long waiting lists, leaving many to figure things out on their own.
Professionally, my background includes roles as an IT business analyst, a college instructor, a database developer, and a university administrator. These experiences have honed my analytical skills and my ability to explain complex topics clearly. I’ve also been an active member of the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) community for many years, which has deepened my understanding of personal financial strategies.
I have completed my QAFP®1Qualified Associate Financial Planner™ coursework and passed the exam in October 2025. In August 2025, I started working as a cross-border paraplanner for Transition Financial Advisors Group. I’m not currently adding content to this site, but I’d like to leave it up as a resource, and hopefully start updating it with additional content in the future.
Why Crossborder Personal Finance Exists: My Mission
My goal with this site is to share the practical knowledge I’ve gained about moving from the US to Canada and managing finances across the border. I want to demystify the complexities surrounding cross-border personal finance – from understanding tax treaties to managing retirement accounts in two countries.
Big picture, I aim to help you achieve a sense of freedom and confidence in your personal finances. It’s about understanding where you are, where you want to be, and the steps to get there.
